In a sign that Microsoft has finally gotten the right idea they seem intent on undoing some of the garbage and hamstrings that basically killed the Zune in the first place. For the first time in almost 4 years now you can finally buy Zune music with your credit cards without the need for those silly Microsoft Points. Sadly I truly believe the convoluted and unexplainable Points program was a major factor in the non start for Zune. Apple understood it was much easier to just take the hit on credit card fees for micro purchase and they iTunes has been racking up billions in sales while Zune has probably been more like millions.

To this day I have 264 Microsoft Points leftover from like two years ago. I bought some Xbox game content with it a few months back so I suppose I could do the same except the Map pack for Modern Warfare is 800 points and I just know I’d end up with even more of those stinking points if I try to add enough for the maps.

Credit Card Purchases Now Accepted: Microsoft Opens Up Its Zune MP3 Store | paidContent

Buried in yesterday’s onslaught of Bing announcements was news that Microsoft’s Zune service was launching a new MP3 store. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) said that anybody who looked up a track on Bing would now be able to stream the track for free via Zune and “purchase any of the millions of pure MP3s from the Zune catalogue.” The move fits with Microsoft’s strategy of pushing its Zune-related services, as opposed to the Zune device itself, and should give the Zune brand some new exposure. After all, while Bing may still lag badly behind Google (NSDQ: GOOG) in the search market, it is attracting millions of searchers a month.

Zune coming to an airline near you? Are you traveling somewhere this summer? You might not need your Zune mp3 player if you are flying on United Airlines because they are offering Zune for free with select flights.

Microsoft’s Zune to Provide In-Flight Tunes for United | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

United Airlines and Microsoft announced in a joint press release today that Zune would be the exclusive provider of in-flight audio entertainment on all United Airlines flights, both international and domestic.

If you’ve flown on United recently, you’ll note that the in-flight audio options are straightforward and standard across multiple airlines, including channels for classic rock, pop, and classical, and while those channels won’t go anywhere, the addition of music powered by Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace adds more variety and selection to your flight.

Zune 360

Yeah mon, can’t wait to get my hands on something like this.

X-Box 360 handheld console on the way? – www.t3.com

X-Box 360 handheld console on the way?
Fancy rocking some GTA IV on-the-go, if T3 get our way Microsoft’s Zune MP3 player could be going gaming. Check out our artist’s impressions.

A Microsoft Zune / X-Box 360 / mobile phone hybrid? Could this potentially be the greatest handheld gadget in the history of the world?

It’s by no means a reality, but it’s been over a year since Big M big-wigs hinted at this awesome combo. While nothing remains concrete, we at T3 couldn’t wait any longer.

Our artist’s impressions from the future tech feature in this month’s T3 Magazine show the three gadgets brought together in revolutionary harmony.

Our vision features the familiar X logo and coloured buttons of the X-Box with the slim and sleek Zune music player, with a 64GB flash drive and a mobile phone built in for good measure.

The Bittercups
The Bittercups

MP3: The Bittercups — One Side

In a hypothetical, fantasy football league of South Florida bands, the Bittercups would be a star pick: two parts Billy Boloby and two parts Heatseekers.

Singer-keyboardist Boloby, guitarist Herman von Uberstein, bassist Terra Marie and drummer Chuck Loose are scene veterans, and bring their experience and attitude to their latest incarnation.

The Bittercups juggle careers, freelance writing, startup businesses and other bands to play punk-inspired tunes with pop keyboards.

Influenced by the Buzzcocks, the Vapors and the Clash, the band shows off their high-energy rock whenever they get a chance, picking and choosing the shows they want to play.

Careers and obligations make it difficult for the band to pick up and hit the road whenever they please, which attracts the interest of record labels. But they have recorded an eight-song album and are hoping to get it released soon.

Zune Smart Shuffle

Gizmodo has this photo of the Zune player with a new smart shuffling system taken at the Microsoft TechFest. A researcher is working on the new shuffle system in response to the huge number of songs people have on their players now. It mentions that with the Zune Pass you could have millions of songs at your disposal and a smart shuffle system would improve the user experience dramatically I bet. the Zune is cool but the shuffle feature is limited and especially if your music is not organized in nice neat folders like much of mine is.

I would love to see a smart shuffle on Zune firmware updates some time in the near future. If they are able to demo it at a TechFest they can’t be that far away from release right?
Next Gen Zune Could Have Smart Shuffling | Gizmodo Australia

At Microsoft’s Techfest, a researcher was showing off a smart shuffle system that uses tags and meta data like tempo and genre to direct playlist creation in a portable music device. The demo was being done on a first generation Zune.

I Am Stereo
I Am Stereo

MP3: I Am Stereo — Chewin’ on a Battery

All the members of I Am Stereo have done their time toiling in local bands — but now they are the ones throwing the rock ‘n’ roll parties.

Drummer Steve Copeletti, guitarist/vocalist Adam Rosenberg, guitarist/synth Jon Wilkins and bassist Brian Hill are all South Florida pros. Copeletti and Wilkins are aka DJ Sloan and DJ Grand Theft Auto in their spare time, spinning at indie rock parties like PopScene at Dada. They have all known each other for a while, but just six months ago came together to form I Am Stereo.

Their sound is ’60s psychedelic mixed with today’s indie pop.

“Like Velvet Underground and Syd Barrett meets the New Pornographers,” Copeletti said.

I Am Stereo is focusing on recording right now, with one EP in the works.

“We’re playing mostly at shows that we put on, to keep up our chops. Hopefully we’ll have two EPs out before the end of the year,” Copeletti said.
