Ninjaman up close at Reggae Sumfest 2008

Ninjaman hits the stage on Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest 2008

Ninjaman is a notorious hardcore Jamaican musician with roots in Dancehall but from the harder side of the dance floor. Ninjaman is well known for his gun loving lyrics and nasty on stage performances. Reggae Sumfest 2008 was no different. The Ninja was not so silent and neither were his fans as he dazzled the crowd with his act performance.

Ninjaman is a local favorite and his show was high energy and powerful. It’s always nice when the crowd knows an artists music and that was certainly the case on Thursday night at SumFest. The crowd seemed to know every word to every song as he belted out some fan favorites.

If you ever get thew chance to see ninjaman in concert then I suggest you do so. If not then download some Ninjaman mp3 files from Amazon and play Ninjaman on your Zune

Reggae Sumfest

I went to the Reggae Sumfest 2007 last July and I got the idea to ask for a press pass this year and yesterday I got an email requesting a photograph for my pass which has been approved. I did not expect that I would be able to do so because I got a late start and actually made my request after the official accreditation process had been closed. I think I was able to sweet talk a very special young lady in SumFest administration who facilitated my special request and was able to help me out.

I was only planning on going for just one day, Thursday evening is Dancehall night and my good friend Ras Slick wants to go that night. The King of Dancehall Beenie Man headlines with Bounty Killer, Elephant Man and Mavado for what should be an explosive evening of hardcore Jamaican musicians. Now that I have backstage and artist access I suppose I’ll have to go for the 3 main evenings and my plans are now to catch Friday and Saturday nights shows as well. I’m not very prepared but I think it should be a fun experience.

Friday nights line-up
features Lil Wayne, Keyshia Coles, John Courtney and Jah Cure who happens to be smoking hot here in Jamaica right now. This guy has a huge fan base here in Jamaica and is set to remain so for quite some time it seems. I’d like to interview him just to ask him some questions about wa gwan here in Jamaica. He seems to be a powerful influence on Jamaican youth and I’d like to hear his views on things in his home country. Jamaican musicians have incredible impact in the development of young Jamaicans and it’s not uncommon to hear 5-7 year old kids singing the latest hardcore hits word for word. I know a few 5 year olds who swear to be “Gangsta for Life” as the “Gully Creep” for me.

Saturday nights show features T-Pain as the main act with Reggae legend Beres Hammond and rising star Tarrus Riley backing up a mixed line-up of international stars. John Holt, Etana and Rootz Underground are also on the bill and should make fora great days music. I’m looking forward to my week. Anyone else in Jamaica for Sumfest with their Zune?

Sayonara Tokyo

Sayonara Tokyo

For Sayonara Tokyo, good things come in fours: four band members, four retro hip blazers and four songs racking up hits on MySpace.

The band is relatively new to the local scene. Self-described as “country punk dancehall rock,” their songs channel the indie rock stylings of the Strokes, with moments of Fugazi-like chaos. Their song Indian Companion brings in the lonely-cowboy “country” aspect of their accurately dubbed genre description.

The well-dressed, Miami-based quartet of vocalist JD (no last name — Madonna style), guitarist Danny Aranow, drummer Nicholas Ellis and bassist Jon Benson has released an EP and is focused on booking shows and getting the good word out.

Find them at myspace.com/sayonaratokyo or thevolumeonline.com/sayonaratokyo.

Lovewhip is dance music. The Boston Globe exclaims “Lovewhip has a celebratory and upbeat feel that has kept crowds dancing everywhere they play!” Part of Boston’s underground but up-and-coming electro scene, Lovewhip creates a live show that is rooted in fun with the passionate vocals and dance moves of the “soulful electro-rock diva” (says the Boston Phoenix) Erin Harpe a.k.a. Empress Erin. Able to get any room going by shaking her infamous booty (see their myspace page), she also rips out screaming electric guitar riffs as she taunts and teases the crowd. Building on influences as diverse as Blondie, Beck, Sean Paul, Missy Elliot, the B52′s and the Cars, Lovewhip has created a sound that people go crazy for.

The project of frontwoman/guitarist/singer Erin Harpe and bassist Jim Countryman, Lovewhip has been making eclectic dance music since their first release Whip It, Baby! in 2000. Lovewhip’s multicultural influences have ranged from Jamaican reggae and dancehall to Nigerian soukous and highlife, afrobeat, and more recently retro 80′s electro. “The overall concept has always been to lift people out of their daily drudgery and get them dancing and feeling good,” says Harpe. And that’s just what they’ve done, touring regularly around the country to great reactions and dancing crowds.

LOVEWHIP’s fourth CD, Virtual Booty Machine, mixes electropop with dancehall reggae, funk, and rock to create a distinctive sound that begs the listener to shake it. Virtual Booty Machine” takes the listener to a bright new future, weaving the sexy soulful vocals of Empress Erin with crunchy rock guitar lines, electro-pop synth lines and a dance beat. The CD was independently produced by Lovewhip with the help of Darron Burke (Makeshift Studio). It includes remixes by Boston scenesters Jeff Czejak (Plunge into Death), MicL PTVN (Lovewhip, Cassette, Campaign for Real Time), and Reggie Burrows (Radio Dread, Trumystic, High Fidelity Dub Sessions #3) and the notorious DJ Monk One from Brooklyn (Turntable Lab Magazine).

While the sexy Empress may be the focal point of the live show, the Lovewhip experience wouldn’t be complete without the boys. “Juicy” Jim Countryman (bass) and Devo Kosces (drums) lock in with precision and lay down irresistable dance rhythms over a myriad of hooky synth lines as well as samples, loops, blips and bleeps that create a thick and heady soundscape behind Empress Erin’s vocals. From their spiffy matching pants to their erratic stage antics, these guys put out, and put their all into each and every performance.

“Virtual Booty Machine” is just the tip of the iceburg for LOVEWHIP, whose sound is gives the masses exactly what they need: pure, unadulterated, high-energy dance music. Quickly becoming dance club favs, Lovewhip has already become a sensation from Boston, MA to Los Angeles, CA and from Portland, ME to Miami, FL and received radio play throughout the country. Lovewhip constantly tours around the country year-round, and is busy planning their first European tour in 2007, so look for them coming to your town soon!

The band has begun work on their forthcoming album which will be released in May 2007.

All of this Zune talk has had my head in a music space lately and this has become a good thing. Working online all day long I tend to keep things quiet here in my office but I’ve found certain music is not as distracting as I had thought it would be. For some reason I can listen to reggae music and still work. Sounds goofy but most other music is distracting to me and I can’t keep focused on work. Somehow reggae relaxes me and I can listen to music and still type this blog post without jacking it up. If I tried that with just about any other style music this blog post would sound silly and probably take all day to finish.

So I found a new reggae radio station on Myspace some time back and invited them to join the forums. ZuneMAX.com member BigUpRadio has an internet radio station playing some fine reggae music for Zune fans around the world. There is simply far to much for me to review everything on their site but trust me when I tell you they have lots to offer reggae music fans. They provide 6 different streaming radio stations in 4 different formats plus over 130 podcasts, artist reviews and so much more its overwhelming

From the About Us Page at BigUpRadio.com

If a farmer is harvesting wheat they must separate the wheat from the chaff. The wheat is the good part, like good reggae music. The chaff is not edible, like reggae that is no good. BigupRadio separates the wheat from the chaff. BigupRadio only plays the best, most slamming DANCEHALL and steady rockin ROOTS reggae music.

These free radio stations play twenty-four hours a day with no advertisements. If you are new to reggae music you can simply tune in and by paying attention to the stations playlists you will expand your knowledge of reggae artists and their work.

Stop by Big Up Radio and Catch a fire, theres a Natural Mystic flowing through the air!
