When the Funky Blu Roots perform live, audiences never know what they’re going to hear. With plenty of improvisation, its members promise that none of the band’s gigs is exactly alike.
“The music can go in all different places and it’s all good,” Mikal Serafim said.
Clubgoers might recognize the name. Serafim is also frontman for Crooked Hat, a progressive alternative rock outfit that he formed in 2002. But Funky Blu Roots is a different sound and lineup.
As a member of the year-old Roots, Serafim shares lead vocals and guitar with Billy Vasquez. Rounding out the band are drummer Goetz Kujack and bassist Debbie Duke.
Serafim sees the group as infusing the blues with fresh energy. “The music has a boogie vibe,” he said. “It’s hard to classify. It’s music to move, groove and party to. Billy and I do a lot of trading off onstage. You never know where the arrangements are going to go.”
The band plays originals, as well as putting its own bluesy spin on songs by a wide range of artists, from Buddy Guy to ZZ Top. The group’s sound has a touch of jazz and other genres, too.
“South Florida’s very diverse,” Serafim said. “There’s reggae and Latin. Some of those elements find their way into our music.”
Plans are in the works to capture it all on a live CD, said Serafim, who will be appearing with the Roots at 11 p.m. Jan. 19 at Fort Lauderdale’s Poor House, 110 SW Third Ave.; 954-522-5145.
