Zune April Fools?

Yesterday I announced the second winner of our Free Zune Giveaway and since it fell on April Fools Day I decided to have some fun with the announcement. Giveaway winners are posted in the forum and I announced the topic to every registered member with the misleading title “You won a Free Zune from ZuneMAX.com” which I thought was funny but I guess one or two of you didn’t. One guy cursed me pretty bad actually but he appears to have issues. Not all Zuners are cool It seems.

I had some fun yesterday just checking some of the other April Foolishness and saw the fun Google and Slashdot had with it. Late last night I read a story on Slashdot that caught my eye. titled “Microsoft set to Announce Zune 360 and 180” describes an article written by BlueBerry Bob title “Zune – set for a revamp“. In this article Bob claims that Microsoft is holding back plans for the current Zuner device because of the impending release of two new devices named the Zune 360 and the Zune 180. The Zune 360 is said to be a touchscreen video player with a full face screen and increased capacity and the 180 is a smaller Nano style player.

When I read the article late last night I thought it was an April Fools gag but now I’m wondering if I was the fool. I reread the article today after I found sites like TheInquirer going with the story and if it is a gag it’s well done. If it’s not what Microsoft has planned then maybe it is what they need to be doing at least. As it stands I have no idea whether it’s true or not but I do agree with their conclusion.

Conclusion
There’s not enough information to say whether the new Zunes will be a success but if this information is accurate the new models will be a major improvement over the original. This could mean some much needed competition in the portable music player market.

Zune – Set for a revamp

Microsoft’s Zune was released in the US in November 2006 and sales have been disappointing so far, in fact except for the launch week there’s been no week where the Zune has sold over 1000 units. A lot of problems with the Zune are caused by perception (a lot of people think they’re only available in brown), pricing (same price as an iPod – people will only pay a premium for the market leader) and the defective by design wireless sharing which adds bulk to the product without providing any useful purpose. The roll out to the rest of the world has been temporarily suspended while Microsoft finalize plans for the Zune 360 bringing them parity with their successful Xbox line of consoles. As yet, no information has been leaked so we have no pictures of this new product, but it is planned to be released in June and in a break from typical Microsoft style of announce plans early and often they’ve decided to follow a more secretive Apple style approach. Still, it’s amazing what information you can get out of a Microsoft rep if you feed them 10 bottles of Duvel, for some of them 2 bottles will even do.

I’ll admit things have been a bit slow around here recently as I’ve been busy with a load of other things to do. I wanted to drop a little reminder that we are still running the Free Zune Player Giveaway and the next Zune winner is going to be announced on April 01. I know what a day to announce the winner but it’s true someone will Win a Zune on April Fools Day. Should be kinda cool actually.

As I mentioned before it takes a bit more than signing up to win a Zune. I’m looking for someone special that loves Zune and ZuneMAX.com so much they spend all their time helping out in the forums with great posts, pics for the Zune wallpaper gallery and other stuff for Zune friends to enjoy.

Need a job? Microsoft is hiring for the Zune team

What’s better than a free Zune giveaway? How about a job with the Zune team? That’s right Microsoft is hiring and they have up to 34 positions available on the Zune team. Up for grabs are jobs like Program Management and Software Tester

I’m looking through the job list for somehting like a Zune blogger needed but no luck yet. I do think I can handle software testing but they won’t want to pay me what I’m worth :)

The need to hire a marketing firm that can make some decent ads and maybe get a few Zune players sold. Testing the software is useless if no one buys the darn device.

BoxWave Flexiskin silicon case for Zune

BoxWave FlexiSkins

It’s been just about 3 weeks since I got my first Zune case. I’m kinda slow to things. The BoxWave Flexiskin is a very nice and well designed silicone skin for a rough Zune users like myself. I’ve put the case through some serious real world testing and I’m pretty happy with it over. I’m not very interested in the belt loop attachment which then gets in the way if you’re not using it but it’s a livable trade off for the convenience of having it should the need arise. The basic FlexiSkin runs $19.99 and is a solid deal at the price. You can get the belt clip for an extra buck and a kickstand for standing your Zune player up for an extra $3. My favorite part of the FlexiSkin is the screen protector mine that it came with. It actually works and protects my Zune screen. My greatest fear is scratching that luscious screen MAX has and I’m probably overly cautious of damaging it. Having the silicone case and screen protector on my Zune made me loosen up with it a bit and do things like just jam it in my pockets or backpack with little regard for what it banged or bumped against. The screen protector is raised just above the screen so as to allow dust to settle between without scratching up the screen like many other protectors do and the case design keeps the screen covered at all times.

MAX is a black Zune and my case is white which gives it a dull gray look that’s really not so bad. The Boxwave Flexiskins for Zune are an excellent deal at the price and if you can win one for free in our Boxwave Zune case giveaway you’ll love it that much more. In order to enter to win a free Zune case from Boxwave just drop by the Zune forums and leave a short blurb on you and your Zune and bingo you’re entered.

And the Free Zune Winner is James Hostetler

Share in top social networks!

We have a winner of the zuneMAX.com Free Zune Giveaway. Our giveaway turned out to be a little different as we did not offer a random drawing like our friends did at Zunerama and ZuneScene. For better or worse I chose to reward a forum member who most exemplified a friend to the community. It was a tough choice and I had lots to weigh but in the end our friend James Hostetler, who posts under the name Spell 125 in the forums, was able to do the right combination of things to impress me and even inspired me to dedicate a little more time supporting great forum members like him.

James has done so much for zuneMAX.com that I feel I owe him much more than a free Zune. He was the first to really step up and produce some unique stuff for the community and I believe inspired a few others to follow. He set the bar high with top quality assistance to forum members over 100′s of posts at this point. James likes to work with graphics and offered to help with the look of things when he created the zuneMAX.com banner on our front page which has become our official logo and is now emblazoned on my new zuneMAX.com tshirt. He made a logo for ZuneGuy and then updated it recently. He’s logged what must be more 100 hours in the Zune chat helping fans with all sorts of stuff and we all appreciate it.

James has done a lot and I could on listing stuff probably but in the end I think he understands what Zune and zuneMAX are about and that’s sharing good stuff with good people. I hope he enjoys his new Zune and has some great times with it. I’m sure we will see plenty of feedback on his new Zune here in our forums as well as his new site at DAPularity.com.

After all this I don’t know if I want to do that again. Choosing between even a top five contenders was very difficult. We have a few others that are equally deserving of a Free Zune and I wish I had more to give but sadly I’m not a wealthy person and Microsoft seems like they ran out of free Zunes after the Ellen show so for now I only have one Zune to give and James gets it. There will be more stuff given away at zuneMAX.com and this is but the beginning. I’m glad to see it was a hard choice and this has most definitely inspired me to do more for the community in return. For those 900 plus of you that did not win a free Zune today don’t sweat it. If you stick around here long enough you’ll win something someday.
