Science-fiction inspires scientists to produce potentially useful technology for society. However, not everything is possible to replicate from science-fiction sources, such as “Star Trek,” due to current understanding of science.
There are examples of today’s technology that mirrors or exceeds the tools shown in “Star Trek.” For example, the cellular or mobile phone is a communication device even capable of sending and receiving photos and videos. In contrast, the communicator in “Star Trek” is not even capable of transmitting photos and videos and lacks a screen. Although computers cannot do everything depicted in “Star Trek,” today’s computer systems use complex algorithms to solve problems or identify criminals in databases.
Due to current understanding of science, it is difficult to design a robot with artificial intelligence that of the android Data of “Star Trek.” There is general consensus among scientists that warp drive is not possible. Transporting humans is difficult even though transportation of atoms and subatomic particles have been observed.
