There seems to be little down time for the Square Egg.

After being on the road for seven months, the 10-member band is scheduled to return home next week and jump into the local music scene with two shows.

While lead vocalist and lyricist Lee welcomes seeing familiar turf again, touring has its benefits.

“You get a chance to see other venues and bands,” Lee said. “It’s good to get out and see what’s going on in the rest of the world.”

The band will bring its blend of funk, hip-hop, spoken word, r&b and jazz to the kickoff of their Back to Miami tour. They play Thursday night at Tobacco Road in Miami, followed by another concert the next night at Jazid on Miami Beach.

Borrowing their name from a book by British illustrator Ronald Searle, the band originally consisted of three musicians when it was founded in 1999. Their size and sound evolved and grew, with influences ranging from Stevie Wonder and the Beatles to Public Enemy.

Lee described the ensemble’s live performances as a throwback to old soul revues like Earth, Wind & Fire. The band’s eclectic collage is featured on its latest CD, Quite Possibly the Best of the Square Egg.

“We’ve been compared to Parliament, if they were fronted by Common,” Lee said.

The Oski Foundation

Some guys would prefer to kick back on their birthday. Not Oski.

The lead vocalist and founder of the Oski Foundation will celebrate turning 28 with cake, croquettas, his band mates and a few hundred fans on Thursday at Tobacco Road in Miami.

The group will be working the room by rolling out its blend of funk, rock, soul, hip-hop and reggae that is tinged by decades of musical influences ranging from Marvin Gaye to Rage Against the Machine.

The show will also mark the Oski Foundation’s return to the local stage after a nine-month hiatus.

“We’d done over 400 shows in six years,” Oski said. “We needed a break.”

The Foundation came out of its temporary retirement Aug. 26 at the Cutting Edge Music Festival in New Orleans, Oski said.

“We did play at Tobacco Road on Aug. 24, but it was a short show, only 20 minutes,” he said. “The October concert will be a full set.”

The band is returning with most of its original lineup. That includes Lush on bass, D-Nasty on guitar and rapper Gardian. Drummer Benny B joined three months ago.

“It feels great to be back,” Oski said. “The fans have been asking when we’re going to play again.”

Joining the Oski Foundation at the club will be reggae by Jahfe, soul singer Cristin and soulful rock ‘n’ roll by Hunter’s Moon. Cake and croquettas from Vicky Bakery in Miami will be first come, first served. The show starts at 9 p.m.

MP3: Evidence — Who I Am

Evidence is expecting to land a knock-out punch in the music biz with its recently released CD.

Evidence 1st Round, which dropped this summer, is the band’s first full-length effort. The group is comprised of three siblings from Pompano Beach who describe their music as progressive hip-hop. That means cutting-edge rap mixed with r&b.

The Tandy trio — Nick, 16, Richard (aka Joka), 15, and Katrina, 13 — have been performing together since they were toddlers. The group is managed by their mother, Candi. An older brother, George Jr., 24, is the choreographer and produced 1st Round. George Jr. also co-wrote the disc’s hip-hop flavored r&b tunes with his brothers and sister.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the kids took up music. Their mother is a voice teacher and performer. Father George Sr. is a jazz/r&b keyboardist and producer.

A fifth sibling, Brian, 21, is a senior majoring in international studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he is also a defensive back on the football team.

The group’s lyrics focus on helping listeners think clearly about what they want to do and make the right choices, Katrina said.

“We have a different perspective on music. Most of the music out there now, if you listen to the verses, it doesn’t get anywhere. There’s no story line, no plot. With us, our music takes you somewhere. Once they hear our songs, people can really relate to it.”

Evidence has performed in Tokyo and Singapore, and last year opened for hip-hop star Chris Brown at a concert in central Florida.

The guys in Earthdog have been spreading their brand of funk since forming two years ago.

The four members are sometimes compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Crowes. They take it as a compliment, said drummer Erik Flinck.

“They’re influences of ours,” he said. “Their sounds kind of come out in our music.”

Flinck provides the back beat for Ben Frank on lead vocals, Wyatt Pauley on guitar and Aaron Ivey on bass.

Pauley describes the band’s original tunes as funk-blues that’s best experienced live. “It’s our strong suit,” he said. “We get to improvise a bit.”

“A lot of people know how to make music,” Pauley said. “But you have to get along to make great music.”

With their roots in South Florida, Earthdog has played at different venues. Their next gig will be all about giving back to the community at “A Day to Remember,” an art show and live concert on Sunday at the Las Olas Riverfront Park, at 300 SW First Ave., in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The event is being organized by Rock-N-Art and the Rock of Love Foundation as a fundraiser to support art and music programs in Broward County’s public schools. Eight bands are scheduled appear from noon to 9 p.m. Earthdog is slated to perform at 1 p.m. The concert will be hosted by Nick Roses of MTV and VH1.
