Zune rumors and web echo

October 26th, 2006 by admin

There have not been very many posts the past two weeks from me. It’s been slow on Zune news and I try to steer clear of Zune rumors I know to be untrue. There have been lots of rumors thrown around since Zune first leaked and I have tried to pick through and discuss what I feel may be at least possible. Many of the articles and topics here deal with what Zune will actually do now that some details have been released.

The past two weeks have seen some really good Zune rumors come and hopefully soon go and I’ve not commented on them. I have become keenly aware of what has been labeled "web echo" which is when someone puts out bad data and people run with it and make bad stories and they become these giant monsters of misconception and bs all wrapped up in one. There is an older term for this. It’s called "GIGO", garbage in garbage out. Our bud Cesar has had many posts related to "rumor and speculation" at the Zune Insider blog and I’ve read so many bad bloggers write just plain garbage about what it can or can’t do that I personally have decided to steer away from that stuff for now. Maybe a rumor about a Zune phone release or something from a reliable source would be considered but there are some Zune rumors that are plain obvious as untrue.

Let’s have a look at the rumored 60GB Zune This one started here at ClicZune I think and although it was a great piece of linkbait it is most likely not true. The article reads as follows:

"According to Incipio Technologies, Microsoft should be coming with a 60Gb Zune mp3 player very soon. On the company’s website, Incipio announced the availability of a leather case for the 30Gb “and” the 60Gb Zune mp3 player. We can read "New! Microsoft Zune 30GB and 60GB Leather Belt Clip Custom Design Case".
If this comes out to be true, is it going to be available in November 14th? At what price? $399.99? What about dimensions and weight?"

But as you will see from my comments below the article there is a more probable reason for their announcing the 60GB leather Zune case in  red and it is that the webmaster copied the 60GB iPod case in red when he decided they would get a head start on the market and release their product. Smart move on his part as they now have a few more links to the site from all the hype surrounding it. They may have even sold a couple 60GB Zune cases. Who knows?

Recently we heard from Gizmodo that Microsoft would be paying us to share with the Zune. Now this one I still find interesting because the new Zune DRM proposed by Microsoft may possibly allow for this type of service to function but I do not think we will see it in the first generation of Zune players. The features of this new DRM are most likely to be found in a Microsoft designed hardware device for total control over security. I chose not to write about that one because I wanted to hear what Microsoft had to say first and when Cesar answered back so quickly to that rumor he confirmed it for me. I know this one to be true but they don’t want us to know about it yet. Future Zunes will facilitate user generated content sales and may offer affiliate relations with users promoting the Zune MarketPlace in return for Microsoft Points but Cesar isn’t in the know on it and can claim so later.

The best example of things gone bad were comments Cesar made on his blog about the current Zune DRM and how it would "wrap all songs up in DRM". Kirk Biglione at MediaLoper wrote a stinging article based on these erroneous statements and the web went absolutely nuts with it and thus was born the term "viral DRM". Cesar clarified his comments and Kirk cleared things up also but did that really stop the rumor from spreading and infecting more people?

I don’t think so and I don’t want to be party to spreading untruths of any sorts. So, now you know why things have been slow from me the past two weeks. I don’t have much to say about the rumors running around right now and there hasn’t been anything new that I can share with you yet. Well, I did get my first of three interviews back from the Zune Crew and I’ll be posting those soon. Some great information in the Zune Crew Interviews coming at you soon from ZuneMAX.com.

iPhone on the way

October 19th, 2006 by admin

ThinkSecret.com reports: In a research note sent to clients, Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora said he expects Apple’s entry into the cell phone market will include at least two phone offerings, reiterating a Think Secret article from one month ago.

What Mr. Tortora adds to the mix surrounding Apple’s phone plans is that one of the phones might be a more robust "smart phone", sporting a keyboard and Wi-fi capability. To date, Think Secret sources have only been privy to details surrounding what is expected to be Apple’s initial push into the market: a candy-bar style phone with a 3-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch display, and some iPod/iTunes capabilities.

Who will the Zune users be?

October 11th, 2006 by admin

As our site grows and our audience increases we have faced questions about what direction we want to go and what audience we should cater to. Are our blog readers and forum members adults or teens, male or female? Are they gamers, gadget heads or music lovers? In our case we have a huge mix with many adults reading the front page blog but some younger members in our forums discussing everything Zune. We have members from dozens of countries translating our pages into many different languages. Recent statistics show females dominate the gaming industry with a full 64% of all online gamers being women and we seem to have a strong following with the ladies as well. We have decided we’ll do Zune to the MAX and try to offer something for everyone.

We’ve wondered recently though who the real Zune users will be. Who will adopt the device and use it most? Will there be a certain type user or demographics that attaches to it and makes it theirs? The iPod began life as the must have device for a younger generation. Teens, tweens and twenty something’s jumped on the cool style and hip marketing and made the term iPod synonymous with portable music. Information released just this week by Solutions Research Group shows that trend may be shifting. According to an article published in Digital Media Wire, the biggest year over year increase in iPod ownership was for people between 30-49, who comprised 12% of iPod owners in 2005, and 33% in 2006.

Has the market really shifted for Apple? Have the younger generations abandoned the device or has the more mature market simply surged ahead temporarily? Some are beginning to wonder if the iPod has lost it’s cool altogether. A recent article in the Guardian Unlimited titled "Why the iPod is losing it’s cool" offers an opinion on the matter. The author, David Smith, writes "The iPod, the digital music player beloved of everyone from Coldplay’s Chris Martin to President George Bush, is in danger of losing its sheen. Sales are declining at an unprecedented rate. Industry experts talk of a ‘backlash’ and of the iPod ‘wilting away before our eyes’. Most disastrously, Apple’s signature pocket device with white earphones may simply have become too common to be cool."

If correct then David and the research done by Solutions Research Group backs up our own thoughts on who will find the Zune most useful. We feel that the wireless music sharing features of the first generation Zune players as they come "out of the box" have been tailored to the teen or youth market. The heavy restrictions on the wireless features of the Zune player seem geared towards security purposes by limiting what can be shared with the devices as well as who users can share with. For widespread acceptance amongst parents as a safe device for their kids the Zune will have to offer limitations in sharing of files. Wireless internet access and wide open file sharing are probably not the safe way to market a device that children may be using in unsecured or public places.

Microsoft may see an opening to steal the wind from iPods sails. David writes in his article for Guardian Unlimited; "Analysts warn that the iPod has passed its peak. From its launch five years ago its sales graph showed a consistent upward curve, culminating in a period around last Christmas that saw a record 14 million sold. But sales fell to 8.5 million in the following quarter, and down to 8.1 million in the most recent three-month period. Wall Street is reportedly starting to worry that the bubble will burst."

Has Microsoft targeted the Zune to take advantage of this slip at an opportune time? That could explain the apparent rush to market with what has been labeled nothing more than a hopped up Toshiba Gigabeat. Does Microsoft realize now was the perfect time to strike at Apple and their dominant position in the DAP market by courting their most powerful demographic with a new cool device?

The limitations placed on the number of partners and how users actually share files seems catered to controlled groups of younger users. Possible scenarios may include smaller gatherings in home settings such as after school, weekends or sleep overs for socializing and music sharing. Public access Zune hotspots such as kiosks or "filling stations" as Zune Guy likes to call them could be located in any mall or retailer and serve as a gathering point for Zune users interested in meeting new people and sharing digital content. Kinda like the game aisle at Walmart where you can try out the latest game against local users in small group settings for a short period of time but far better. At the local Zune hotspot, music lovers can sample music under the 3 day / 3 play DRM from the Zune Marketplace via kiosk or sponsoring retailer as well as from a community of users gathered at or near the location. Zune spots could be located in high traffic areas or tied to existing WiFi hotspots where similar or related groups may gather. Whether or not Microsoft see this opportunity or will be able to capitalize upon it remains to be seen.

Zune sharing also holds implications for use by many others such as DJ’s and podcasters for example. The wireless broadcasting features in the first generation device seem to be limited for such uses now but if the demand exists as it seems to the market will force Microsoft to offer updates which enable full broadcast or even streaming capabilities for the Zune. Musicians or DJ artists could broadcast 3 day / 3 play DRM sample tracks as promotional materials at local clubs or music events so that in the future you can take the party or concert home with you at the end of an evening. If you happen to enjoy a particular DJ or musician you can purchase the track from the Zune MarketPlace and continue to enjoy it.

Of course many Zune users will buy a music player and have no need to share music with friends much less the general public and new people. But Microsoft may realize that in order to beat Apple at their own game they need to change the game. The wireless sharing features of Zune are probably not for everyone but the possibilities it offers for social networking amongst the younger crowd are intriguing to say the least. If Microsoft is able to develop a popular device that offers services similar to that offered by Xbox Live then they may well have the right product and service at the right time to take the cool factor from Apple and sweep the market from them just like that. Yes Apple will fight back and may well innovate beyond Zune but ask yourself if they will be able to endure a long drawn out battle for the top spot with Microsoft when they face so many other competitors entering the market?

There may well be a method to the madness that is Microsoft. They did not become the largest software company by mistake or through incompetence but instead by swallowing up the competition in the blackhole of cash in their bank accounts.

It’s Zune.net and not Zune.com

October 4th, 2006 by admin

It’s Zune.net and not Zune.com

So it looks like Microsoft has slipped up with the Zune domains. They have failed to purchase quite a few domains that we are aware of but to look at what is happening now seems they have really screwed this one up. RedHerring reports that Microsoft will not be using the preferred domain for the upcoming launch of their new MP3 player. According to the article they were unable to secure Zune.com and will have to open up under Zune.net which they just recently acquired.

If that were not bad enough it also seems they missed out on some others. Zunemarketplace.com is listed for sale on domain broker Sedo.com. Representatives from Sedo.com confirmed that Zunemarketplace.com was in fact listed by a seller and the price is $1,499. While we understand they would not buy every name related to the Zune we wonder how they would neglect to purchase the name of the Zune online music service. Not the smartest thing they have done.

We’ll have to keep an eye on Zune.net to see when they will go live with the site.

I got a list of retailers where you can buy a Zune on November 14. As I said in an interview w/ our friends at Zunescene today: “We’re confident that retailers will have solid availability, and any consumer who wants to purchase a Zune will be able to do so.” Which retailers you might ask? Check it:

EB Games

Target

Best Buy

Costco

Fry’s

Amazon

Meijer

Staples

Transworld

Toys R Us

Circuit City

Office Max

Office Depot

Wal-Mart

Kmart

GameStop

Sears

Nebraska Furniture Mart

J&R Computer World

So there you have it; a lot of retailers are excited to sell Zune this holiday season. I’m sure other retailers will be added over time, and as they are, I’ll add them. And lastly: happy shopping, friends, happy shopping.

Zune MAX looking good

October 2nd, 2006 by admin

Our new forum moderator Spell 125 has graciously donated his time and effort to assisting me, the graphically challenged, by designing a new header for the front page of the Zune MAX blog. The goal was to flow better with the design and style of the forums and to show our relationship to the Zune device.
I think it looks awesome and I’m most appreciative of his work for our community. Spell 125 is on a roll considering he was also the lucky winner of a Zune poster when selected as designer of the Zuneguy logo.

Spell 125 is better known as James Hostetler and for his blog DAPularity which offers the low down on the latest digital audio players (DAP) in the market. He’s come up with a cool iPod vs Zune size comparison image that shows the difference between a Zune, an iPod and a deck of cards. It really helps put things in perspective as to the actual size of Zune for those of us unfortunate enough not to have held one yet.

James also has a nice write up on Rock Box on Zune. which is a very designable custom firmware used to extend the software capabilities of digital audio players. He feels Microsoft has no reason not to open up the Zune for customization or "modding". He writes in his DAP blog: "By basing the coding off a commonly used language and OS, Windows made their PDAs easily accessible to windows-based applications and allowed them to run a multi-tude of interesting multimedia programs. I would have to say I expect the same efforts for the Zune. By placing no barriers between the Zune and its customers, I believe Microsoft will open it up to those respectable modders that make our life so much more personalized."

I have to agree with James in that the best move Microsoft can make is to open up the Zune platform to the army of existing Windows developers for an almost endless array of extensions and applications for Zune. The power of the Windows development world is a vital asset in the success and capabilities of Zune. I’m hopeful the announcement by David Cauldon at Zunester about there not being a Zune SDK relates to the fact they have something much larger prepared for Zune developers. I think it may be more like a Zune XNA Framework, or Zune ZNA maybe, that would be used for development on the Zune. David says Zune is not a platform but a  consumer device. I say the consumer will decide that the Zune is in fact a platform and should left for all of us to personalize with third party extensions for a truly "connected experience" in our "digital lifestyle". The market will force them to open the platform to developers if they want it to succeed and in the end there will be a Zune SDK of some form or other.

So, I would like to thank James for his work on cleaning up the look of things around here. I would also like to thank all the other dedicated members of the Zune community for their ambitious assistance in building a great forum. We’re having fun in our Zune boards and you should check it out if you haven’t yet.
